SQ Livestock Gate by FFC Fencing

At FFC, after many years of the frustrations of trying to deal with unresponsive and unprofessional gate manufacturers, the decision was made late in 2008 to begin manufacturing our own line of livestock gate. We did not arrive at this decision quickly or without significant research. After this extensive research and testing the new “SQ” gate was born.

Over 35 years of livestock handling experience has been used in designing and building the FFC “SQ” livestock gate. During those 35 years, FFC has found that a gate design needs to address a number of problems:

1. A gate needs to have lateral strength to resist bending. The “SQ” gate is fabricated from heavy gauge square tubing because of the up to 40% increase in strength that square tubing offers over round. Examine the photos below to see how these “SQ” gates performed in an actual strength test.

2. It needs to swing easily in all types of conditions. The “SQ” gate was designed with five bars rather than six which allows it to be installed high enough to clear snow or bedding build up, and still match the top line of a fence.

3. It needs a hinge system that can handle its weight. The custom designed and fabricated, heavy duty hinge on the “SQ” gate will not turn and let the gate sag. The 3/4” x 12” bolt hinge makes the level of the gate easily adjustable.

4. The gate needs to remain attractive and resist rust. The “SQ” gate is fabricated using tubing galvanized inside and out to assure a long life with no need for paint.

And, most importantly, a gate must be supplied by a dependable and committed company that is responsive to its customers and delivers what it promises. FFC has proven that level of service for the last 35 years.

Livestock Gate Examples

To test the actual strength of round tube verses square tube gates, two supports were set up 12’ apart. Here a round tube gate gets it’s first 60 pound bag of concrete. No problem yet.

After three bags (180 pounds) the gate has sagged 2” to 29” from the floor.

The round tube gate sagged a little more with each additional
bag. After nine bags (540 pounds) the gate has
sagged 8” to 23” from the floor. It is starting to get a
bit scary!
One of our brave team members placing the tenth bag on the round tube gate. Notice, he looks to be ready to jump out of the way.
Luckily, no injuries! The gate gave way with the weight of the 10th bag. Failure at 600 pounds
The “SQ” gate sagged to 25” from the floor and remained
there throughout the placement of the 18th bag.
1080 pounds of weight and no failure! Nearly double
the weight supported by the round tube gate… which
gate would you rather trust to contain your livestock?
